Jails and Corrections

Many law enforcement agencies operate holding facilities and jails. In addition, officers must be familiar with best practices for interacting with correctional facility personnel. Courses in this section cover correctional practices as well as temporary holding facilities.

Corrections 1 No matter the size of the agency or the rank of the individual, it is important to control situations in a jail, prison or courtroom setting. As corrections officers, you will also need to be able to demonstrate certain techniques for dealing with prisoners in unsafe situations. 1h
Corrections 2 In this training block of our Corrections series, we will specifically address techniques for handling unruly prisoners so that both officers and prisoners stay safe. It will include an examination of foot traps, close-quarter strikes, and cell extraction techniques. 1h
Corrections 3 When dealing with uncooperative inmates, corrections officers must be able to handle them safely and effectively. In this course, you will learn how to employ effective baton techniques such as baton strikes in confined spaces, baton use in close quarters, and how important it is to offer touch drills to your officers. 1h
Corrections 4 Officers are often put in situations where they should be able to recall training techniques. In this training block of our Corrections series, officers will discover the benefits of using tangible training drills that include Inert OC spray as well as Edged Weapons Defense Training, among others, to stay safe. 1h
Mental Health in Jails – NEW! Inmates are twice as likely as the general adult population to experience mental illness. Managing these inmates safely and securely is an important skill for correctional officers. In this course, we will review the symptoms and warning signs of common mental illnesses and discuss strategies and best practices for managing inmates who are mentally unstable. 1h
Temporary Holding Facilities Making arrests is a regular part of law enforcement’s job. As such, there will be times when you need to retain temporary custody of arrestees, pending investigation, processing, transfer, or release. You will also need to decide if the arrestees should be temporarily held in custody and if they are appropriate for your department’s temporary holding facility. Once the decision has been made to detain an arrestee, several other factors and decisions must be made in order to ensure a safe and secure detention. This course will prepare you to make the most appropriate decisions to ensure that arrestees are safely and securely detained in your temporary holding facility. 1h
